Great Wolf Lodge: Our Low-Stress, High-Joy Birthday Escape
Brian’s Birthday Kerfluffle
A milestone deserves a celebration, and this year, Brian’s birthday "festivities" meant packing up the car for our latest trip to Great Wolf Lodge in Perryville, MD, from September 8th to 10th. Thanks to the absolute blessing of one of our homeschool groups—our secret weapon for snagging those incredible discounts—this low-stress getaway has become a cherished ritual we repeat a few times a year.
What truly makes this vacation low-stress is the traditions. It means trading complicated outfits for comfort: our faded, coordinating GWL sweatshirts are practically part of the check-in process. We bring our beloved, worn-in stuffed animals from previous trips, the trusty Magic Quest wands from our very first visit (we call them "wand whippers"), and a cooler full of our own meals, retreating to our rooms for cozy meal times. Of course, a few special indulgences are mandatory; this trip, the girls unanimously chose Build-A-Bear because they had the perfect Halloween options!
This year, the adventure had a hilariously unexpected start. Brian, bless his heart, forgot to take off work. Yes, you read that right! While that briefly threatened my sanity, the panic immediately dissolved when my parents graciously jumped in. They became my incredible daytime co-pilots, helping me manage the fun while Brian committed to meeting us every evening. Thank goodness the resort isn't too far away! An unexpected side benefit of Brian's office detour? His "no" button was temporarily disabled, which made the Build-A-Bear purchase a smooth operation!
That decision led to our best Build-A-Bear experience yet! The 'Bear Expert' we had was charming, engaging, and so funny. She ran a detailed bear ceremony at the end, and during the part where the girls were asked to rub a cloth heart over their own hearts to add love, my super-smart, straight-A student, Grace, placed it squarely on her stomach because she forgot where her heart was! It made me laugh so hard—if it’s not relevant to her personal list of strange and unusual facts, she lets information fall right out of her head. We truly enjoyed that expert; if you see her there, definitely make time for the Build-A-Bear experience.
Our core crew was a wonderful mix: the three youngest girls, my supportive parents, the nighttime arrival of Brian, and Bryce with her polite and helpful boyfriend, Aiden. I was smart enough to book two adjoining rooms—a comfortable boys' den for Aiden, Pop, and Brian, and a girls' retreat for the rest of us. I truly enjoy having Aiden around; he's such a gentleman, and Bryce always seems to behave better when he's around. We definitely missed Emery, who couldn't get off work, and Ryland, who had college commitments, but they were certainly with us in spirit!
This trip was leveled up by my generous parents, who purchased the Adventure Pack for us. Having unlimited bowling, mini-golf, and ropes course access was a game-changer and was absolutely worth the money. We ran through all three activities repeatedly, sometimes as a whole crew and sometimes split into smaller, more efficient groups. This was essential given the age spread of my children. Priscilla, our little water sprite, would happily live in the waterpark for five hours straight, pausing only for Violet, Wiley, Sammy, and the other woodland animal characters, crafts, and her beloved Magic Quest. Meanwhile, the older kids, who have outgrown the character meet-and-greets, were old enough to venture off on their own to hit the ropes course again.
Though gem mining isn't on our agenda every trip, we consciously decided to try it again this year. The wide age gap in the girls now works entirely to our advantage! I purchased the largest bag and had it split, turning it into a total money-saving win. The real victory, though, is watching the older girls—now much more chill about glittering rocks—graciously let Priscilla claim the best one. It's a rare, beautiful truce where everybody gets what they want, and I don't have to referee a rock fight. That's a low-stress vacation goal achieved.
Beyond the structured fun, it was lovely to bump into friends from our co-op and connect. Priscilla made a new friend—the sweetest little girl from New Jersey. We kept crossing paths, and the girls would instantly fall into play, leading to planned meet-ups later in the trip. I really hope those two stay in touch; their family was just wonderful.
The trip was, as always, a huge success. Great Wolf Lodge remains my go-to, low-stress vacation. We operated in a perpetual state of bathing suits or PJs, which means zero fuss over outfits. It’s simply one of my most relaxing places to visit with the kids. I can’t wait to do it all again! See you in December, Great Wolf!
