The Perfect October Surprise:

A Date Night with Ghosts, Ghouls, and a Glittering Gift Shop

My husband Brian is a man of many talents. He can fix a leaky faucet, drop obscure historical facts into any conversation, and, most importantly, he knows the fastest way to my heart. This week, his chosen path was paved with fake blood, screams, and one very adorable clown. Being that it’s October—the only month where it’s socially acceptable to wear a zombie mask to the grocery store—Brian decided a typical dinner-and-a-movie wouldn't cut it for date night. Instead, he led me straight into the terrifying embrace of the local haunted house: Hera's Nightmare at the Town Mall of Westminster. Y'all, I love fall, and this triple-threat haunt is one of the best ways to celebrate spooky season!

Hera's Nightmare isn't just one haunted house; it's a terrifying triumvirate of fear, with three separate walk-through haunts all rocking different, incredibly clever and imaginative themes. My voice is still a little shot from all the delightful screaming! I have to hand it to the creators: the level of detail was lovely. This experience was far too sophisticated for cheap scares. Instead, we were plunged into scenes featuring classic, high-quality horror. Brian kept trying to use a big word like pusillanimous to describe my screaming, but I was too busy being genuinely terrified by zombies that looked freshly dug up and were moving with that perfect, lurching hunger, Werewolves that gave off serious primal, furry-and-fanged vibes, Vampires—the beautiful, blood-sucking kind—making you wonder if you should run or ask for their skincare routine, and the creepiest of all: the apocalyptic plague sections. The set design and the actors’ unsettling behavior there was brilliant and terrifying. The makeup on the actors was so well done that I was actually a little worried about their general well-being. Seriously, the jump scares were perfect. They got me every single time. I’m pretty sure I grabbed Brian’s arm so hard he’ll have a bruise shaped like my handprint—sorry, honey! If you want to experience the fun for yourself, they're open Friday and Saturday nights all this month (7 pm until 9 or 10 pm). Go! Tell them the slightly out-of-breath lady with the tight grip sent you.

Now, here’s the unexpected gem of the night: a selfie walk-through. After dodging werewolves and running from the plague, it was hilarious to step into a perfectly lit, spooky-themed room just to pose like I was in a gothic fashion shoot. It was a brilliant, fun way to decompress and get some truly fun pics in spooky scenarios—I really, really liked that. We got some great shots that will definitely haunt our family Christmas cards (just kidding... mostly). Of course, no mall experience is complete without some shopping and snacks! We hit the gift shop and found some truly cool items—purses, soaps, and all sorts of neat, spooky trinkets. It's the perfect place to grab a unique item that says, "Yes, I like being scared, but I also have excellent hygiene.” Outside in the mall, characters were roaming, and treats were available for purchase. We saw a snack stand full of salty and sweet treats and, get this, a cute little clown selling the goodies. I usually run away from clowns, but this girl was genuinely charming. Nearby, the Another World Cafe was serving up hot dogs, burgers, and other great eats to fortify you before or after your walk of terror.

Seriously, if you are looking for an authentic, genuinely fun, and scream-inducing date night or friends' night out this October, you all need to check out Hera’s Nightmare. Brian, you nailed it. Now, about that foot massage I need after all that heart-pounding action... 👻
